Gringo Calle 13

Gringo Calle 13

A site for non-Spanish speakers to enjoy the great lyrics of Calle 13.
Yesterday, when I read the news that a legislator in Mississippi wanted to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America. It got me thinking, are idiocentric and hateful ideals the new American paradigm? At least in states like Arizona, Alabama – let’s just say the south – they are. And I wonder if these people have any idea of the actual history of this continent – of the Americas. When people say Columbus discovered America, do they actually think that he set foot in this country? That America is a country? Do they know that the idea of impeaching a ruler comes from an Aztec tradition? And that’s why Montezuma was stoned to death by his own people? Do they know that the idea of a confederation of provinces where one federal government controls the states is an idea stolen from Iroquois League? It seems to me that this country is getting dumber and dumber.
Last week it was the anniversary of the Treaty of Guadalupe - Hidalgo, In this treaty largely dictated by the United States. Mexico surrendered half of its territory for $15 million dollars, and the condition that the Mexican citizens living in that territory will be able to keep their land and live there as new United States citizens that of course didn’t happen. So yeah, ignorant people Mexicans have been living in this country way longer than your ancestors who came here without papers and just took their land.
Our own government is a hypocrite when it comes to forcing immigration laws. Why? another country I’m fond of it’s been having immigration issues for decades but the United States and European nations tell that country to take care those people because their country is too poor. This is from one third nation to another. I am referring to Haiti and Dominican Republic, they share an island the size of West Virgina. Yet, both countries are so different in culture. Over 25% of births in Dominican Republic are from Haitian women, and guess what? they don’t pay one penny. Imagine if that was happening here in the United States, it’ll be civil war all over. I’ll stop writing about politics and hopefully whatever I wrote put something in your brain. And if you ask, what this have to do with this blog and Calle 13? their song “Pa’l Norte” is about an immigrants all over the world.
“I’m quite sure that people will look upon my attitude and sentiments and look for hypocrisy and hatred in my words. My revolution is born out of love for my people, not hatred for others”- Immortal Technique

“here, we dance like poor people dance” - Baile de los Pobres. It’s the song that Calle 13 has been using to open every concert they’ve had during the last year.  It’s a very catchy and danceable song with references to people with a higher social status that consider people from the lower classes lesser than them. During their concerts they say that people are there to have fun, and dance. If you are a guy with a button down, and shoes or a girl with make up and high heels then the concert is not for you. In their concerts you sweat it out and miss behave.

My grotesque lyrics are more educated than your silence. -digo lo que pienso. This song is about Calle 13 saying what he thinks. He says it straight up. I believe this line is straight up dissing reggaeton singers that hate on him, because he is successful without selling out, and does not sell a “gangster” image. Also within the song he refers to a politician in Puerto Rico, that called Rene, the singer of calle 13 a coke addict. In the song Rene challenges the politician to do a drug test, and see which one is the real drug addict.
P.S. In this picture his shirt says 4% for Education, I believe he is in a concert in Dominican Republic supporting the “yellow voices” cause that challenges the government of the Caribbean nation to implement what it says in the constitution of the country 4% of the GDP should go to national education, for decades the government has only been allocating at the most 2.5%.

This photo has a lot to with the quote I used here. It’s from the Chilean student protests that were happening in Chile earlier during this year. I am not going to get into detail as to why the students were protesting. If it interests you you can look it up. But the fact that the student movement in Chile decided to use this quote says a lot about Calle 13. First of All, the quote it’s from “La Bala” a beautiful song in which Calle 13 questions why are bullets so cheap? If they were more expensive people wouldn’t be killing each other the way they do. The quote also intertwines with education, basically it says that the less you read, and educate yourself the easier it is for you to pick up a gun. Calle 13 is a big advocate for Education trough out Latin America. They support the cause in Chile and also the 4% cause in Dominican Republic.
